St John of God’s new Day Oncology and Day Infusion Centre in Berwick is providing an expanded program of integrated cancer services for patients in southern Melbourne.
Located within the St John of God’s Berwick Specialist Centre which opened in February 2015, the Day Oncology Centre features twelve treatment spaces and other cancer support services including radiotherapy, medical imaging, pharmacy and on-site pathology.
St John of God Berwick Hospital CEO, Lisa Norman said the Specialist Centre provides an integrated cancer service that was rarely found outside the centre of Melbourne.
“The collaboration between our hospital and other leading health care providers like Radiation Oncology Victoria, MIA Radiology and HPS Pharmacy increases the capacity of the service and offers a unique model of integrated cancer care,” she said.
“Demand for cancer services in the area has increased significantly in recent years and cancer survival is improved by offering services that allow early diagnosis and improved access to treatment.”
“The Day Oncology Centre has been designed to be a calming and tranquil place for patients undergoing cancer treatment, with large windows offering natural light and views of Berwick and surrounding suburbs.
“This environment is proving to be a place where family members feel comfortable to come and spend time with their loved ones during treatment. It also includes a wellness centre that offers patients and carers a comfortable, home like space to relax before or after treatment.
Since opening the building, the hospital has introduced a Community Wig Service in the Centre. This free service is available to anyone in the area (not just St John of God patients) who is suffering from cancer related hair loss. The service is operated by St John of God Berwick Hospital and run by fully trained volunteers. It has been established through the kind donations of many within the local community.
Initially opening 4 days a week, the Day Oncology Centre has recently begun opening an additional day in response to the demand.
The St John of God Berwick Day Oncology and Infusion Centre is now open at 55 Kangan Drive Berwick. It is part of a larger $120 million development which will see the relocation and growth of all services currently offered at the St John of God Gibb Street hospital, with the addition of the region’s first Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac services that include dedicated cardiac beds and a Cardiac/Vascular Catheter Laboratory.
